and laborious. We'll see if I can make some headway searching the
forums.
Post by Steffen NissenHi Mark,
I think one of the other reasons that the mailing list is 'dead' is that
FANN is quite a mature open source project now.
The last time I used it I found everything I needed, good examples, good
documentation and a mailing list full of previous peoples problems that can
be searched.
The fact that you don't see constant traffic on the mailing list about
problems with FANN is probably a good thing :-)
In fact, most of the problems I ever saw on the lists (and on my brief check
of the forums) are usually related to bindings to other languages.
Stick with FANN, if you get stuck i'm pretty sure you'll find the help you need.
One other thing, your program will only ever make a handful of calls to FANN
functions, swapping FANN out for a different library later if you are
unhappy with FANN would be relatively trivial (compared to the probably much
more complex parts of your stock prediction program)

Thanks. I'm not much of a forum user as it forces me to go find things
every day instead of receiving emails, but if that's where this
community is playing then I'll go jump in.
Cheers,

Post by Mark KnechtHi Steffen,
Thanks for the response.
I sort of finalized on Linux for now. I don't like Windows much and
hate to create reasons to use it when I don't actually need it.
Also note that back in the same time frame (8/30/09) I also posted
that at least in the Gentoo package for FANN (and I think the version
on the web site IIRC) that some of the examples would not compile
because benchdata.h was missing. I did eventually solve that (somehow)
as I think it wasn't in the correct directory. I really don't
remember. It's been too long.
I haven't actually done anything with FANN over the last month
wondering if this community was at all active these days. I guess it's
sort of a typical Open Source thing. If I start using it and there's
no one to talk to then I will fail. However if I don't start there's
no way to get other folks involved. Is FANN alive and well enough for
a new user (and a non-programmer) to learn and make use of? I'm not
sure...
Cheers,
Mark
Post by Steffen NissenHi Mark,
Just noticed that nobody had replied to this.
FANN is originally developed under Linux, so more of the examples and
benchmarks work here, but more and more use it on windows, and Visual Studio
is much easier for novice users than emacs on Linux.
So my recommendation for you would be to use Visual Studio on windows.

Hi,
I've been subscribed to this list for a few years out of a general
interest in neural networks and their application to recognizing
patterns that might predict movements on stock prices. I have used a
commercially available NN program for a while (Trading Solutions) but
it's pretty limited so I thought maybe I'd investigate writing a
little code using FANN. I don't expect that I'd use this for actual
trading any time soon but it's my area of interest and focus so why
not?
To start I'd like to understand what platform might be best for me
to develop on. I am not a programmer by training and have no
significant exposure to programming tools. I do use R on Windows and
do some programming in Easy Language on the TradeStation platform.
(Again Windows.)
On the Linux side I have run Gentoo for years which is source
based. Is there a difference in the tools available on the two
platforms? I do not own any Windows-based programming tools and prefer
to use Open Source on either platform if possible.
I do not expect to do a lot of graphics work in FANN. More likely I
would like FANN to read and write csv files which would then get used
in R with other programs I've written there.
I have installed the FANN library on Gentoo and built the examples
loaded in the install. Everything in the examples directory built fine
and seems to run correctly so that's code I can start studying. The
code in the benchmarks directory did not build. I'll look into that
later. Possibly I didn't copy something required from the docs/fann
directory to my local work area.
For my interests and background which environment would you
recommend and why? Thanks in advance for your inputs.
Cheers,
Mark
